Not long ago, the “Most Tedious Web Content Challenge” was held. Now – how would you like to be a finalist – or worse yet, the winner, in that contest? “Hey everybody, come to my site because I have the most boring content on the web!”
No thanks.
You’ve heard it over and over again, write great, interesting, sharable content. But what if you feel your in a somewhat boring niche?
Or are you writing for a dull client in a monotonous niche? How can you get readers excited about mundane topics like locksmithing or plumbing, or even distasteful, unpopular subjects like rash creams, or enemas?
Here are ten tips to help you create compelling concepts for even the most boring of niches:
1. Change your personal perspective before you write anything.
If you think it’s boring, your readers will, too.
Anything could become interesting if it is presented in an interesting manner.
It’s just a matter of finding the right way to present it to your readers.
And the first step is to get yourself absorbed in your subject so that your passion will show in your writing.
2. Find the golden numbers.
Dig out industry statistics and find the fascinating bits that help to pull people into your story.
Do you sell hardware? How many nails go into building the average house?
Does your niche involve floor coverings? If you took all the carpet laid down in one month, how big of a city/state would it cover?
Numbers can become fascinating when applied in a way that people can easily understand and share with others.
3. Use stories and anecdotes.
Let’s say you sell directions on how to refinish furniture.
Your subject, ‘Annie,’ was always the shy type, afraid to speak up and lacking the spirit to do even the simplest of tasks outside of her experience.
Then she purchased a beginner’s instructions for refinishing basic antique chairs.
Within a month she completed her first project, and now a year later she’s refinished over a dozen pieces, sold 9 of them for a substantial profit that she put away for college, and kept for herself or given away the rest of the antique pieces.
Most important of all, she’s achieved a newly achieved sense of accomplishment and confidence, which has followed over into other areas of her life. Now, that’s pretty exciting!
4. Do a daily question and answer.
Every day, create an “ask an expert” blog post or video, where you answer one question.
This can create interaction, likes, and shares by getting real people to ask questions through social media sites.
5. Address what’s wrong in your niche.
Maybe legislation is pending that could hurt your industry, or someone in your niche is ripping people off. Be the leader and speak up about it.
You’ll not only capture the attention of your readers – you’ll likely get links from other sites as people join the conversation.
6. Promote a cause.
Sometimes when you run out of things to say about your niche, it’s time to take a fresh look outside of your business and find a cause.
For example, a personal injury lawyer who’s helping homeless puppies and kittens to find new homes – that’s not only unexpected, it’s even a warm and fuzzy subject – literally.
And if your business is only online, you can still choose a cause and make it your own. Put a real face on it – furry or human – and tell why you, your business and others should support this cause.
If you can pick a cause that is aligned with your business, so much better.
For example, a food niche might pick out a program to feed the hungry. A remodeling/decorating business might prefer something like ‘Habitat for Humanity.’
7. Hold content contests.
Have your readers create content for you, based around the subjects you choose.
The better the prize, the more quality entries you’re likely to get.
Pick the top entries and then get them to get their friends to vote for the best one with retweets and Facebook shares.
Publicize the contest to get more entries, more press, and more backlinks.
8. Become a hub for industry content.
Who says you need to write all of your website’s content yourself? Ask other industry leaders to contribute if they like.
9. Use images.
It’s just a fact; people tend to stay on your website longer when you use engaging, compelling, and related images.
10. Stretch Out In Your Niche.
Say your niche is car accessories – why not do an article on the coolest cars in car-based movies?
Maybe your niche is about math tutoring, find the movies that use math, and talk about those.
It’s a great way to get your audience to relate to your products.
Even the most mundane of topics can become interesting you’ve just got to find the right angle to write about and the right PLR can help you get started.
